Overview of Liga MX
Essentially there are two tournaments within a single Liga MX season, crowning two championships. The Apertura (opening) is the first one and then the Clausura (closing) proceeds. Both are 17-game league seasons followed by a tournament playoff phase resulting in a grand final for the silverware. Club America is the most successful club with 13 titles. However, after the World Cup in Qatar and criticism about the Mexican team’s efforts, the governing football association is exploring methods to change Liga MX to help player development.
That’s not the only change afoot in the league. Liga MX long had a confusing relegation and promotion system where it was very difficult to work out. Relegation was determined by the angulation of five seasons’ results and only one team was sent down. Then as clubs that were relegated folded due to financial difficulties, the league stopped relegation altogether and froze the teams in the league. A new system to promote and relegate teams is set to come in mid-2023, especially with the success of the Liga de Expansión MX, the new second-tier league in the country.
While teams would normally want to finish first in the league, doing so in Liga MX is somewhat of a poisoned chalice. At least, by superstition. The curse of the superlider is the belief that the top-ranked club come to the end of the league season will not go on to win the playoff tournament, despite being statistically the best. This long-standing thought is a product of multiple instances of it occurring.
One of the most interesting factors about the league is that Tigres UANL was able to attract Andre-Pierre Gignac to play in Mexico after he had won silverware in France with Marseille. He’s been a resident in San Nicolás de los Garza since 2015, frequently stating he intends to end his career in Mexico.
In 2023, the best player in the league is arguably Henry Martin. The Club America forward has shown that even at the age of 30, he’s got all the skills to compete as he’s scored 27 goals and made 11 assists. There are reports that he might leave the club to play for Vasco da Gama in Brazil, however, he’s played his entire career in Mexico and might not want to leave. A season in Major League Soccer would be more realistic for a decent payday, and is much closer to home.
