As the most successful team in German football, Bayern Munich has a very high standard of what a season should look like. Winning the Bundesliga title is often part of those plans. The team has set out and accomplished that in every season since 2012/13, winning 10 straight league titles. While it is slightly jarring for other German supporters, the club at least plays attractive football which is very easy on the eye. This season, however, Borussia Dortmund are pushing Bayern as much as they can. At the end of April, just one point separates the two teams in first and second position.
Werder Bremen isn’t in the title conversation. They’re almost comfortably mid-table with no real chance to qualify for any UEFA competition or face relegation to 2.Bundesliga. While in theory, the players should want to finish higher up the table – a few might have already gone into holiday mode with inconsistent results creeping in. Two players who can’t be singled out for criticism however are Marvin Ducksch and Niclas Fullkrug, who’ve almost been solely responsible for Bremen’s goals this season. Sadly for Werder, the latter is out with an injured calf for the foreseeable future.
As the resident overlords of German football, Bayern has commanded success in this fixture as they do against most teams. Across the past 10 meetings, Bayern has won nine of the games and drawn one – leaving Werder with no success in that duration. Thomas Muller particularly enjoys the game having scored 13 times and made 19 assists in 27 games against Bremen. That’s more than one direct goal contribution per game against this opposition.
Bayern Munich famously bought Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen after he was out on the scrap heap by both Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion. Famously, one of his former managers, Tony Pulis said he wasn’t good enough for the Baggies. Several seasons later he’s winning UEFA Champions League titles with Bayern. His move to Bayern from Werder Bremen did however short-change the selling club as they only received around eight-million euros for the player. For context, he’s now worth an estimated 55 million. Ardent Werder fans aren’t best pleased with that business strategy.
