Match Preview
After defeating Arsenal 4-1 in the Premier League, Manchester City became odds-on favorites to win the league as Erling Haaland’s flaxen hair swished in the spring Lancashire air after netting his 33rd goal of the campaign. The Norwegian has been an unstoppable force in front of goal, punishing opposition defenses week after week. Of course, he simply added quality to an already well-oiled machine including top stars like Kevin de Bruyne, John Stones, and Ilkay Gundogan. Four titles in the last five seasons represent somewhat of a monopoly that the club has on the division.
Leeds United flourished in their inaugural season back in the Premier League back in 2020/21, yet have since dropped off, narrowly avoiding relegation last season, and now are fighting to stay in the top flight again. Javi Gracia was installed by the Leeds United board to help with the survival bid as results under Jesse Marsch stumbled below the expected standard. While the incoming Spanish manager started well in West Yorkshire with wins against fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, his tactics have since come under question. Most puzzling is his indecision to deploy Wilfried Gnonto, a player who has consistently played well even if the team hasn’t. Humbling defeats to Liverpool and Crystal Palace ensured that the Leeds United faithful became increasingly irate with the direction the club is going in.
There is of course a small sentiment for the Mighty Whites within the Manchester City camp. Pep Guardiola often praised the former Leeds boss, Marcelo Bielsa, as the godfather of attacking football and affectionately said if they swapped teams, he would falter whereas Bielsa would go on to dominate world football. Erling Haaland was born in Leeds while his father was playing football at Elland Road. Furthermore, he’s an ardent Leeds supporter and is often seen in the offseason wearing LUFC training gear. Neither of these niceties will stop either the manager or talisman from doing a professional job to step further toward winning the title.
Under Bielsa in the fabled 2019/20 season, Leeds went undefeated against Man City as they drew 1-1 at home and then went on to win 2-1 at the Etihad against all odds having played most of the game with 10 men as Liam Cooper was sent off early in the game. Since that season though, this fixture has belonged to Pep Guardiola notching up a 7-0 win, then a 4-0 result, and most recently a 3-1 triumph.
