AC Milan vs Inter Milan Preview
UEFA Champions League semi-finals are always tense affairs. The Derby della Madonnina (the Milan derby) is a volatile fixture at the best of times, so with so much hanging in the balance there’s almost a guarantee of goals, emotions, and an unparalleled desire to win. This is the first time the pair have played each other in European competition since the infamous flare night in 2005, where the match was abandoned.
Despite the two clubs lifting the Serie A title over the past two seasons, neither has managed to truly challenge Napoli in the league campaign this season. With Inter being dumped out of the Coppa Italia in late April, the UEFA Champions League presents the only available trophy to both clubs. While both will want to lift the silverware, denying the other the chance will taste just as sweet.
Given that the teams share the San Siro stadium (Giuseppe Meazza for Inter fans), the home and away fixtures won’t be too different other than the fan seating allocation. This first meeting with AC Milan as the home side will be the fourth meeting between the clubs. The Rossoneri won the first fixture 3-2 with goals from Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud.
Inter Milan however went on to win the next two encounters, which included the 2022 Supercoppa Italiana contested in Saudi Arabia. That game was an empathetic 3-0 victory for the Milanese blue-and-black and a real confidence booster for the team. Hakan Çalhanoğlu starting the game added insult to injury as the Turkish midfielder spent four seasons with AC Milan before crossing the divide back in 2021. Francesco Acerbi also sits in that camp now plying his trade with Inter yet having started his career across town. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on the books at AC Milan and played for Inter in the past yet is unlikely to play any part in the tie due to a complicated injury.
Both teams come into this European tie with inconsistent form, with neither guaranteed of qualification to the Champions League through the domestic division route. Meaning that winning the competition could be the only way back into Europe’s most desired and elite-level tournament.
The two-legged tie also stages another managerial meeting between two of Italy’s most recognized football managers as Stefano Pioli and Simeone Inzaghi square off from the dugouts again. There’s a student-and-master theme with Pioli being ten years Inzaghi’s senior and having managed both Lazio and Inter well before the latter was considered for those jobs. In total, the pair have met 18 times before, across multiple teams and fixtures. It’s Simeone who boasts the historical advantage having won eight of the games, to five losses and four stalemates.
